The 2014 China (Dongguan) International Science and Technology Cooperation Week and Talents Introduction Event Program themed by “Smarter City & Intelligent Manufacturing” came to a close on December 5. The most eye-catching key words were definitely “Smarter City” and “Intelligent Manufacturing” whose significance could be best explained by the Exhibition Area in Songshan Lake Sci & Tech Industry Park.

Songshan Lake Sci & Tech Industry Park, brimming with innovation, vitality and hi-speed development, is indispensable to each Cooperation Week. This year is no exception. In addition to huddled participation by robot enterprises, six Songshan Lake-based public sci & tech innovation platforms appeared on the Cooperation Week this year, displaying their most cutting-edge scientific research and technology.

Six major platforms are not in the least bit shy of showing off their new achievements in “Smarter City” and “Intelligent Manufacturing”.

With the purpose of displaying the development progress and significant role in “Smarter City” and “Intelligent Manufacturing” of the new-type scientific research institutes, Songshan Lake government invited six local public sci & tech innovation institutions to make up a themed exhibition area on this year’s Cooperation Week. They are Dongguan Innovation Center of Tsinghua University, Dongguan Institute of Opto-Electronics Peking University, School of Mechanical Science & Engineering of HUST, South China Institute of Collaborative Innovation, Cloud Computing Center of Chinese Academy of Science and Institute of Electronic and Information Engineering in Dongguan UESTC respectively.

Visitors could be totally charmed by the 3D printing technology at the booth of South China Institute of Collaborative Innovation. South China University of Technology (SCUT) has always been committed to research and development of 3D printing technology and up to now has three generations of self-developed 3D metal printer available, making it the undisputed leader in this field. According to official from South China Institute of Collaborative Innovation, the 3D printing technology independently developed by SCUT is mainly applied in the medical domain and related products have been subject to quantity production. It is a promising year for the South China Institute and it is expecting more cooperation opportunities in Dongguan to jointly promote the industrialization of the 3D printing technology.

The laser holographic technique displayed by Dongguan Institute of Opto-Electronics Peking University was simply amazing. According to official from the Institute, video call in the future will not be only satisfied by two-dimensional vision, instead, 3D figure will pop up on the phone screen to allow you to have a face-to-face talk without wearing 3D glasses. Reporter learned that the Institute had been hammering at research and development of glassesless 3D laser holographic technique and already made key breakthrough in core technology.

The deputy director of the Institute and project leader Mr. Liu Ming said, “This technology can be widely used in a variety of fields and therefore has an alluring prospect in both future market demand and industrialization.” In addition to relying on Postdoctors Work Station to accelerate industrialization of related proven technology, the Institute is working hard on how to construct interactive 3D AR images floating on the desktop by combining the laser holographic technique with the augmented reality (AR) technology. Once worked out, it will derive a wide range of very practical commercial products for medical, industrial, military, museum and processing purposes.

The purchasing head Mr. Ni Lvjun told the reporter that the Institute had brought the most advanced photoelectric technologies to the Cooperation Week, including laser holographic technology and biological lighting technology, and would open up broad prospects for industrialization. “With the help of the Cooperation Week, we would like to locate suitable partners to industrialize these latest technologies through joint efforts,” he added.

Mr. Ni also said, “Peking University is absolutely famous enough to wield a lot of influence. On the first day of the Cooperation Week, the Institute has reached initial intend of cooperation with 40-odd professional visitors. Among them some are regional government sectors stretching out olive branch and some are business enterprises feeling satisfied with our specific technology and expecting mutual-cooperation industrialization.”

Professional visitors came to the stand of Cloud Computing Center of Chinese Academy of Science in a steady stream for further exchange. On this year’s Cooperation Week, the Center has brought a multitude of innovative technologies, such as Cloud operating platform and intelligent street lamp, and also an incubation platform named Smart Cloud Venture Project.

As the reporter learned from the Center head, they were thinking how to industrialize and commercialize the cloud computing technology by drawing support from the 43-mu Smart Cloud Venture Project, and at the moment the Project had clustered more than 40 enterprises mostly from the cloud computing field.

Some professional visitors fascinated by the Smart Cloud Venture Project talked over with the booth staff and also expressed hope for settling down their venture project in the Smart Cloud Area. According to the Center head, they would be happy to give gracious assistance to those high-quality projects and proceed to joint research, development and marketing of products.

Songshan Lake Robot Achievements Exhibition aroused extensive concern.

The world-leading roboticist from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Professor Li Zexiang told the reporter how exactly he felt for the Cooperation Week, “At the moment when you walk in the exhibition, you will find yourself enjoying a beautiful melody sweetly played in tune as so many robots are running in one way or another.”

The reporter noticed that the Cooperation Week had intentionally set up Songshan Lake Robot Achievements Exhibition Area to popularize Songshan Lake International Robots Industrial Base and 15 robot enterprises, including DJI Technology. Many exhibitors expressed attention received on the exhibition grew far beyond expectations. On one hand, enterprises from upstream and downstream of the industry chain came to discuss cooperation. On the other hand, companies of the same industry came to learn from us.

After the unordered materials are transferred to the visual system by conveyors for positioning, the robot enables accurate tracking to and then picks up the materials in movement. This is how the robot works. Besides, the robot is capable of processing the information from four conveyors at the same time within the range of 1600mm, tracking the position of materials on each conveyor and managing the movement of each conveyor.

The robots developed by Quotient Kinetic Machine became rock stars on the Cooperation Week. General manager Ms. Shi Jinbo was greatly pleased when she saw so many visitors stopping at the booth and consulting on the first day of the exhibition.

Songshan Lake Robot Achievement Exhibition Area, covering a total area of 510 square meters, showed in detail the construction situation of Songshan Lake International Robots Industrial Base and also the efforts in building Songshan Lake into a robot industrial cluster. For this purpose, Songshan Lake government compiled the Robot Industry Introduction Manual.

2014 China (Dongguan) Intelligent Manufacturing and Robots Summit Forum grandly opened on December 2. As the deputy mayor Mr. He Yu said on the Summit, a number of local high-quality robot enterprises emerged and flourished one after another, including Googol Technology (Dongguan) Ltd. specialized in servo drive and motion controller, Quotient Kinetic Machine specialized in basic machine design and vision sensing, Guangdong Yingdong Hi-tech Automation Co., Ltd. specialized in encoder and DJI Technology specialized in mobile robot.

All abovementioned robot enterprises, mainly incorporated by professors well-known in the robot industry both at home and abroad, boost strong independent R&D ability and a certain amount of patents. Beyond doubt, these Songshan Lake-originated enterprises tried all means to shine on the Cooperation Week and became the visiting card of the robot industry.

DJI Technology has been hailed as the world’s leading researcher and manufacturer of unmanned aircraft control systems and its unmanned planes make up 70% of the global market. DJI displayed its core products on this year’s Cooperation Week. The reporter learned that on November 26 DJI had launched the world’s first 4K-supported unmanned plane whose visual positioning system could realize fixed-height and fixed-position hovering even in a room without GPS signals by employing the tailor-made photographer and ultrasonic technology. Its excellent functions and indices were well received in the industry.

For Dongguan Jinlong Equipment Co., Ltd. professionally engaged in research, development, design and manufacturing of coating equipment, this was the first time to participate the Cooperation Week. A company official told the reporter that its products with a domestic market share of 50% had been widely used in the mobile manufacturing and some consumer electronics fields, and with the help of its products, manufacturers could save a great deal of manpower. What’s more, with an experimental plant set up in Dongguan and a production base covering a total area of 18 thousand square meters, the Company expects to cross the line of 50 million yuan in sales.

In addition to a 480m2 robot training area set up adjacent to Songshan Lake Robot Achievements Exhibition Area, 3C Robot Technology Summit was held for two successive days during the Cooperation Week. The Summit was cosponsored by Songshan Lake International Robot Industrial Base, South China Institute of Collaborative Innovation, International Research Team of Motion Control and Advanced Equipment Technology, Dongguan Robotics Association and Yaskawa Electric (China) Co., Ltd with the aim of probing into the application and development trends of industrial robots in 3C industries. For that purpose, 11 keynote speeches and trainings were held, attracting a total number of over 1,000 participants.

In the opinion of Professor Li Zexiang, since Dongguan does an excellent job in mobile and tablet PC manufacturing, the application of industrial robots in 3C industries is doomed to be one of the main tendencies of Dongguan’s “replacing workers with machines”, and for this time, the enterprises present at the Summit, who have already gotten the first dibs on this specific field, use their own experience and provide the 3C manufacturers the best solutions for “replacing workers with machines”.

A typical success of application of industrial robots in 3C industries must count Shenzhen Rapoo Technology Co. Ltd. The general manager Mr. Deng Qiuwei said, “Its customized industrial robots have played a major role in production, helping to reduce its number of workers from more than 3,000 to less than 1,000. Its promotion of 3C robots relies heavily on seamless coordination of different links instead of the robots themselves.”

The professionals on site believed that there was a huge demand for automation in the 3C industries not only in Dongguan but also the whole Pearl River Delta, and speaking of which, Songshan Lake-based enterprises were making overall arrangement in a proactive manner. Not long ago, Quotient Kinetic Machine won the first prize of Dongguan Sci & Tech Innovation and Venture Competition in Songshan Lake by virtue of its “High-performance Industrial Robots Used in 3C Industries” Project. As a matter of fact, the robots independently developed by Quotient Kinetic Machine have already been widely applied in rapid sorting, grabbing and assembling in the 3C industries.

Professor Li Zexiang also added, “Vigorous development of robot industry actually kills two birds with one stone, because it is helpful for the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry and robots themselves are high-end products.”

Guangdong Intelligent Robot Industrial Technology Innovation Alliance (hereinafter referred to as “the Alliance”) declared its official establishment on the 3C Robot Technology Summit, which will further facilitate robot industrial technology innovation and huddled development.

According to the secretary-general of the Alliance Mr. Zhang Guojun, the first Board of Governors consisted of 4 universities and colleges (Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Harbin Institute of Technology Shenzhen Research College included), 7 scientific research institutions (School of Mechanical Science & Engineering of HUST included), Dongguan Robot Industry Association, Dongguan NC Equipment Industry Association and 80 enterprises (Googol Technology included), and academician Xiong Youlun held the pose of honorary president.

According to relevant information, the Alliance is planning on the following measures. First of all, it will be actively committed to technical research and development in the field of intelligent robot manufacturing, so as to make breakthroughs in core technology. Secondly, it will be energetically engaged in design and development of intelligent robots, particularly in new structure, new manufacturing technique, equipment and application. Thirdly, it will establish a technical training system exclusively for providing research and training space for technical backbones, and will enhance international cooperation and exchange.

Songshan Lake Institute of Robot Collaborative Innovation and Songshan Lake International Robot Industrial Base inaugurated successively in this year. It means Songshan Lake’s robot innovation is increasingly growing and in return, promotes the rapid development of the robot industry. As Professor Li Zexiang said, a group of entrepreneurs from Hong Kong, Mainland China, the USA and even other parts of the world would get together in Songshan Lake and start a brand new industry. Songshan Lake International Robot Industrial Base aims to build a world-class robot industrial platform. It is foreseeable that a batch of brilliant hi-tech enterprises will settle down in the Base in a decade or two.

Songshan Lake International Robot Industrial Base told the reporter that their next step was first to emphasize on planning and construction of the Base itself and supporting facilities, for example accelerated promotion of incubators, boosters and international schools, and then to complete the decoration of the transitional sites (i.e. the second and third floors) as soon as possible and win some high-quality projects. “Besides, it will work harder on inviting sci & tech projects, attracting talents and carrying out propaganda work in famed universities and colleges in Hong Kong and overseas countries, so that an array of robot projects of great development potential will make the Base home,” he added.

Talents Introduction is also given full priority to.

Talents Introduction is another great theme on the Cooperation Week. On one of the high-level talents introduction symposiums, Songshan Lake Sci & Tech Industry Park fully showed to the outside world its soft power to attract more high-level talents.

The official of Guangdong Yingdong Hi-tech Automation Co., Ltd. who is also a member of the strategy to attract global talents to Dongguan was present on the symposium and gave a detailed introduction of how he started and sustained a business in Songshan Lake. “After settling down in Songshan Lake, the company was given great support from the government in terms of either physical business space or market exploration. I believe the key robot components will be subject to industrialization very soon thanks to the generous assistance from Songshan Lake Management Committee,” he added.

The reporter learned that many enterprises offered considerable salaries and sufficient scientific research funds to attract high-level talents. For example, Guangdong Medical University would give 400 to 1,000 thousand Chinese yuan as annual salary to a pace-setter in preclinical medicine, and Dongguan MicroPattern Corporation has similar situation. For another example, Amperex Technology Limited would be happy to offer the overseas high-level talents with free-of-charge bachelor quarters and buffet in addition to high pay, aiming to solve their worries behind in an all-round manner.

According to the head of Songshan Lake Management Committee, a number of platforms including Dongguan Overseas Students Pioneer Park, Dongguan Doctors Pioneer Park and Songshan Lake Postdoctors Work Station have been set up in Songshan Lake in a bid to better attract overseas high-level talents, propel commercialization of research findings and foster hi-tech enterprises and entrepreneurs. Among them, Dongguan Overseas Students Pioneer Park, as the city’s strategies of reinvigorating through human resource development and of scientific & technologic innovation, is the one and only of the kind in Dongguan and the first national-level sci & tech business incubator. Besides, it is of great significance of attracting overseas students and domestic high-level talents to start a business in Dongguan. At present, the Park is planning to construct a 100,000 m2 new incubation base covering the Overseas Talents Venture Incubation Area, Outstanding Talents Venture Project Acceleration Area and Dongguan Talents Building in an effort to ensure better environment, greater support and superior service for human resource development.

What favorable policies will enterprises and entrepreneurs enjoy after settling down in Songshan Lake? As the official from Songshan Lake Management Committee responded, in order to encourage high-level talents to innovate and start a business, Songshan Lake has set up special funds drawn from not less than 10% of the tax revenue from Songshan Lake Sci & Tech Park every year, and a subsidy up to 10 million yuan will be granted for talent introduction and cultivation. 

Songshan Lake has also established the “Set Sail” special fund exclusively for starting sci & tech business, offering rewards up to 20 million Chinese yuan. In addition, for the cause of sci & tech innovation, Songshan Lake has set up “Scientific and Technological Development” special funds, mainly used for creating an innovative atmosphere, encouraging independent innovation ability enhancement and speeding up transfer and transformation of innovation achievements.

New energy vehicle industry develops in a centralized way.

In the New Energy Vehicle Exhibition Area, Guangdong Dongguan New Energy Vehicle Industry Technology Alliance (hereinafter referred to as “the New Energy Vehicle Alliance”) together with EAST Group Ltd., Dongguan PowerWise New Energy Co., Ltd. and Dongguan 3-Innovation Electric Vehicle Technology Co., Ltd. attended the exhibition. They fully showed the actual strength of Songshan Lake’s new energy vehicle industry in terms of the key links like electric vehicle and charging point research and design as well as battery management. Quite a few professional visitors came to their booths to look over, consult and seek cooperation.  

An 6.6m-long electric car weighted 500kg and another 8m-long one weighed 1.5t parked at the New Energy Vehicle Exhibition Area. These two big guys indeed became the rock stars. The president of New Energy Vehicle Alliance and chairman of EAST Group Ltd. Mr. He Simo and the director of Institute of Dongguan - Sun Yat-Sen University Mr. Zong Zhijian arrived at the scene and actively introduce the new energy vehicle industry of Songshan Lake.

As Mr. Zong explained, Dongguan Institute of Sun Yat-Sen University now possesses all the proprietary technology in new energy vehicles and its product, over 70% of whose components are originated from Dongguan, is superior to the same vehicle model manufactured by others by 20% in cost. “At present, some vehicle models only require half an hour for full charging and the distance per charge is 150-200 miles. Along with ever strong promotion of new energy vehicles, the self-develop electric vehicles also see a promising prospect. 100 electric passenger cars of two different models are expected to put into service at the end of this year or the beginning of the coming year as scheduled,” he added.

The reporter learned that Dongguan Institute of Sun Yat-Sen University, in order to advance the research and development of new energy vehicles in a better way, had established Dongguan 3-Innovation Electric Vehicle Technology Co., Ltd. that was mainly engaged in research, development and industrialization of light-weight electric vehicles and relevant components. According to the source, the company has figured out its unique “3 Innovation (i.e. new structure, new power and new energy)” technology system and developed its distinct technical features and product advantages.

As a company official said, the company has developed multiple vehicle models (including pure electric passenger car, mini bus and bus), among which two models of light-weight bus have been subject to product announcement by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the PRC, and also manufactured 60 buses for the purpose of testing and demonstration. What’s more, the company is capable of an annual output of 600 pure electric buses.

Guangdong New-type Lightweight Electric Vehicle Engineering Laboratory, jointly established by Dongguan 3-Innovation Electric Vehicle Technology Co., Ltd. and Dongguan Institute of Sun Yat-Sen University, boosts a prominent R & D and manufacturing team consisting of 100-odd professionals and a spacious R & D base covering 8000sqm. The Laboratory is equipped with system simulation laboratory, hardware in loop laboratory, motor test laboratory and lightweight vehicle trial-production plant.

In July this year, the New Energy Vehicle Alliance inaugurated in Songshan Lake and began to put the construction of a new energy vehicle industrial park into agenda. The to-be New Energy Vehicle Industrial Park is initially expected to accommodate finished vehicle manufacturers, battery manufacturers and automobile applicators and to form a complete industry chain consisting of entire vehicle design, battery research and development, marketing and application.

The New Energy Vehicle Alliance has taken a series measures within a few months since its establishment. For example, it has reached close cooperation with Taiwan-based China New Energy Vehicle Industry Technology Alliance in order to bring in good technology, talents and enterprises. For another example, it expands its cooperation with the USA, Japan and some other foreign countries and builds innovation teams, initially achieving integration of international resources.

To be more specific, the initiator of Taiwan-base China New Energy Vehicle Industry Technology Alliance Mr. Yuan Jianzhong has introduced high-end talents and technologies and applied for building an innovation team in joint effort with Dongguan Institute of Sun Yat-Sen University, marching toward the path of high-level research institution. Both Tatung Company and Fukuta Ele. & Mach. Co., Ltd. have the intention to set up a branch in Songshan Lake. In addition, for enhanced communication and exchange, Taiwan-based China New Energy Vehicle Industry Technology Alliance has established a representative office in Songshan Lake.

Mr. Zong Zhijian said, planning of the New Energy Vehicle Industrial Park is well underway at the moment and furthermore, the Alliance is thinking to build an industrial base, a R&D base and a demonstration base and hopes to develop a nationally known electric vehicle industrial cluster. It is expected that the aforesaid Industrial Park will reach full capacity of 100 thousand electric buses and cars in 2017.  

 

Songshan Lake, as a well-endowed R&D base, is plotting to construct a trial-production plant possessing 300 workers and covering 20,000 square meters in 2015 and also a professional lightweight electric vehicle R&D platform targeting at three major series of finished vehicles and three core components. Furthermore, Songshan Lake will be the first to demonstrate the new energy vehicles.
